You know I’ve lived enough life to have seen my fair share of trials, tribulations, and plenty of worry. I used to think that worrying was my way of controlling a situation—or preparing for the worst.
But here’s what I’ve learned after many years:
Worrying never serves me well.
In fact, worry only drains my energy, clouds my mind, and makes me feel smaller than I truly am. So, I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out ways to move past it.
And one of the most powerful techniques I discovered came from none other than life coach Tony Robbins. He calls it a “state change.” And trust me—it works.
How to Shift Your State: From Worry to Bliss
Whenever you’re feeling tense, stressed, sad, or worried, it’s time to change your state.
Here’s how you do it:
1. Sit Still and Be Present
Find a quiet place and give yourself permission to pause.
2. Call Up Your Happiest Memory
Close your eyes and think back to a moment when you were truly, deeply happy. Maybe it was a beach day, a special celebration, or a moment when everything just clicked. Try to recreate the scenery in your mind—hear the sounds, feel the sensations, and see the details.
3. Let the Warm Glow Rush Over You
Don’t rush this part. Let yourself sink into the memory. Feel the happiness fill your body from your toes to your fingertips. If you’re not feeling it yet, that’s okay. Sometimes it takes a while to move from stress to bliss—especially if your mind has been stuck in worry for a while. Just keep breathing, remembering, and allowing the joy to bubble up.
4. Amplify That Feeling
Take a few more moments to intensify those happy feelings. Try to feel even more of that goodness—allow yourself to get close to an ecstatic state of being. Smile, laugh, even dance a little if that helps. Your goal is to flood your body with happiness.
Are You Feeling It Yet?
If not, don’t worry. Go back to the beginning and try again. Sometimes your mind needs a few rounds to let go of stress and step into joy.
But when you finally get there—when you feel that rush of bliss—celebrate it. You just created an amazing emotional space without traveling, spending money, or relying on anyone else. You simply chose to shift.
Why This Works: The Power of a State Change
Our minds are like radio stations—sometimes they’re tuned to worry, fear, or stress. But you can always change the channel. When you actively choose a happy memory and relive it in your mind, your body and spirit respond. It’s like flipping a switch from darkness to light.
As Glinda, the Good Witch, said to Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz:
“You had the power all along, my dear.”
And guess what? You still do. You have the ability to transform any less-than-good state into a better one. Anytime, anywhere.
Use Your Power
Whenever life gets heavy, remember: You don’t need a vacation or a big distraction to feel better. You just need to shift your state. And once you practice this a few times, it becomes easier and faster to make the switch.
You have the power to create a happier life for yourself—right now, right here. And you don’t even need fancy ruby slippers to do it. (Though they could be a cute touch!)
Q: What’s your happiest memory?
