I Had to Bail Myself Out of Deep Credit Card Debt Twice

I Had to Bail Myself Out of Deep Credit Card Debt Twice

Financial mistakes can be some of the toughest life lessons, and I’ve had my share of them—especially when it comes to credit card debt. I’ve had to bail myself out of deep credit card debt twice. The first time was a few years after graduating college, and my dad came to the rescue. But the second time? I was in my 40s, old enough to know better, and I had to bail myself out.

Here’s how I turned things around:

1. Cut Up My Credit Cards

The first step was to cut off the source of my spending problems—literally. I took a pair of scissors and chopped up every single one of my credit cards. This might sound drastic, but it was necessary. I knew I couldn’t rely on my self-control alone; I needed to remove the temptation entirely.

2. Paid Cash for EVERYTHING

Next, I committed to paying cash for everything. And I’m not talking about swiping my debit card—I mean real paper money and coins. When you physically hand over cash, it feels more real. You become acutely aware of every dollar leaving your hand, and that awareness is powerful. It made me rethink every purchase and prioritize needs over wants.

3. Set Up My Debt on an Automatic Weekly Installment Plan

Finally, I set up an automatic payment plan to tackle my debt systematically. Instead of trying to make large payments all at once, I opted for a lower weekly installment of $25. This approach felt manageable and less overwhelming. Over time, those small payments added up, and slowly but surely, my debt started to disappear.

It took a few years, but when I finally paid off that last dollar, I felt so good and empowered. The weight of financial stress was lifted, and I could breathe again. Living a life with no money stress is liberating, and it’s possible—if you’re willing to make some tough choices.
