Let me tell you a little secret: You’re already a leader.
Yep, even if you don’t manage a team (yet), run your own business (yet), or feel like you have all the answers (no one does, by the way). Because leadership begins with ONE… and that one is you.
If you can learn to lead yourself well—your energy, your time, your purpose—then everything else gets easier. Whether you’re building a dōTERRA business or dreaming up your next big thing, self-leadership is where the magic starts.
This is why I adore something called The Law of Navigation. It’s an ancient leadership principle inspired by how Moses organized the Israelite tribes in the wilderness (yep, we’re going biblical for a sec). He didn’t just shout “Let’s go!” and hope for the best. He planned. He structured. He led with intention.
And guess what? I use these same principles every single day in my dōTERRA business and with my team. Because building something meaningful takes more than passion—it takes a plan.
Here’s how YOU can start applying The Law of Navigation—whether you’re leading a household, launching a business, or simply trying to feel more in control of your life.
- Plan to plan. Don’t skip this. Take time to think, dream, and organize. I call this “planner and peppermint time”—I sit down with my notebook and oils and set the tone for the week.
- Determine your primary purpose. What’s your “why” behind the what? Mine is helping others feel empowered—body, mind, and bank account.
- Assess the situation. Where are you starting from? Whether you’re just unboxing your dōTERRA starter kit or restructuring your business, get honest about what’s working (and what’s not).
- Prioritize the needs. In business, not every task is equal. Focus on income-producing activities (IPAs!) and personal connection first.
- Ask the right questions. What’s the next best step? Who can I support today? What does my team need? Questions open up possibility.
- Set specific goals. “Grow my biz” is vague. “Enroll 3 new customers and host 1 class this month” is a roadmap.
- Clarify and communicate. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about helping others feel seen, heard, and clear on what’s next.
- Identify possible obstacles. Life throws curveballs. Kids get sick. Tech goes bonkers. Expect them. Laugh a little. Adjust and keep going.
- Have an open system approach. Stay flexible. Honor your own rhythms and your team’s personalities. This isn’t a cookie-cutter gig—it’s real life.
- Schedule everything you can. I mean everything. Team calls. Self-care. Customer follow-ups. My calendar is color-coded joy!
- Budget everything you can. Time, money, and energy are all valuable currencies. Spend wisely and don’t forget to invest in you too.
- Monitor and correct. Check in often. What’s flowing? What’s flopping? I treat my business like a canoe trip—I constantly adjust my paddle stroke.
- Study the results. Evaluation is your best friend. Don’t just “do” a thing—learn from it. That’s how you grow with grace instead of spinning your wheels.
Here’s the real truth: You don’t have to wait for a title, a perfect plan, or permission to lead. You simply have to decide to show up—for yourself first, and then for others.
When you lead yourself with clarity and intention, you become the kind of leader people trust. And that’s where real impact begins. Whether you’re growing your dōTERRA business or any other soul-led dream, the path is the same:
Lead one. Then lead many.
And if you ever need a compass or a cheerleader—I’m right here, oils in hand, ready to help you chart your own beautiful course.
With love + lavender…;)
