Leadership is a funny thing. It’s not about being the loudest in the room or having the perfect plan—it’s about showing up, staying aligned, and loving people well.
Over the years of growing my dōTERRA business and coaching others through their own wellness and entrepreneurial journeys, I’ve discovered that great leadership doesn’t require a corner office—it just requires heart. And maybe a few drops of Peppermint or Adaptiv® blend.
I recently came across a list titled “Lessons in Leadership” and found myself nodding and smiling because… it’s basically the backbone of how I run my business (and my life).
Let’s break it down:
Trustworthy leaders must have pure motives.
In the world of wellness, authenticity is everything. People can smell fake from a mile away—especially when you’re talking about essential oils. I lead with a heart to help, not to sell. When I share a product, it’s because I’ve used it myself, I believe in it, and I genuinely want others to feel better. That’s pure motive. That’s trust.
Commitment separates the doers from the dreamers.
I’ve met so many women with beautiful dreams—but taking action? That’s the magic sauce. In my dōTERRA team, I invite people to dream and do. We plan, we stretch, we show up to the hard days with grace and grit (yes, even in sweatpants). Because consistent, imperfect action always beats waiting for the perfect moment.
Vision is essential: You can’t seize what you can’t see.
Before I built a business, I had a vision—of freedom, wellness, community, and impact. Every step I take is guided by that vision. I help my team get clear on their vision too. Because when you can see what’s possible, you start walking toward it—even if it’s just one baby step at a time.
Leaders must be faithful over time and flexible with their schedules.
Building a dōTERRA business doesn’t follow a 9-to-5 rhythm. It flows with life. With family. With seasons. I’ve learned to be faithful in the little things—daily routines, following up, showing up for team calls—and flexible when life says, “Hey, change of plans!” (Hello, RV life!)
Leadership and responsibility must be shared according to giftedness.
This is my favorite part of strengths-based coaching. I don’t expect everyone on my team to lead like me. Some are incredible nurturers. Others are brilliant organizers or charismatic presenters. I help each person find their lane and lead from their gifts. It’s a beautiful thing to watch.
Leaders must understand their resources before they plan their journey.
Before setting goals, I look at what’s already in our toolkit: our passions, our time, our connections, and yes, our oils. I teach my team to leverage their natural talents and strengths—because when you know what you’re working with, the journey gets a lot clearer (and a whole lot more fun).
Leaders must be secure enough to handle conflict, criticism, and confrontation.
Let’s be real—business isn’t all lavender fields and citrus sunshine. Sometimes, hard conversations happen. Sometimes people say “no” (or ghost you altogether). But a secure leader doesn’t crumble. She listens. She learns. She leads with love anyway.
So here’s the big truth: My dōTERRA business is about so much more than essential oils. It’s about growing leaders who are wholehearted, wise, and ready to change the world—one drop, one conversation, one relationship at a time.
And if you’re reading this and wondering, Could I be a leader too? Let me whisper this truth into your heart: You already are.
You just need the right support, the right vision, and maybe a few of the right oils.
